Saturday weather update: Up 6 inches of snow possible in Minnesota

The latest from the National Weather Service is calling for up to six inches of snow in central Minnesota as a clipper system moves across the state Saturday night into Sunday morning.

For the Twin Cities, 1-2 inches appears to be most likely. The higher totals are expected north of Interstate 94. There won’t be lot of precipitation with this system, but the snow-to-liquid ratios could be upwards of 20-to-1, so the flakes will be very fluffy and pile up faster.

The forecast discussion from the National Weather Service in Chanhassen notes that “snow totals will range from about 1-2″ south of I-94 into south-central MN, to 2-3+” north of I-94.”

The HRRR model is coming in with some impressive snow totals across west-central and north-central Minnesota, with up to 7 inches in spots.

The NAM 3km model isn’t quite as robust, but it does keep totals under two inches in the Twin Cities.

The European model is similar to the HRRR.

Blowing snow could also be a problem…
