Have you ever heard of a Juicy Lucy? You can find them at multiple burger joints across the Midwest. Did you know it actually started at a small bar in Minnesota ? The same bar, that’s been around since the 1950s has recently been named one of the cheapest restaurants in the United States.
Cheapism put together a list of the best cheapest restaurants in every state. Naturally, I had to dig in and find out more about this Minnesota landmark. Especially when it seems that a modest lunch anywhere these days costs at least $15 (if you’re lucky.)
Matt’s Bar – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Matt’s Bar in Minneapolis, Minnesota has been named the best cheap restaurant in Minnesota. Don’t be fooled by the word “cheap.” In this case, it’s an accolade.
The Jucy Lucy (Yes Spelled Without An I)
Matt’s Bar started as a burger joint in 1954, over 70 years ago! According to the history on their website, owner Matt Bristol created the Jucy Lucy. It was created when a customer asked for two burgers with a slice of cheese in between them. When he bit into it, he said, “Wow! That’s one Juicy Lucy!”
They said customer demand rose so quickly for the legendary burger that they forgot to add the I to ‘Juicy,’ and today the burger is still known as the Jucy Lucy. (Spelled wrong.)
