Trains, toys and treasures: Minnesota hobby store braces for higher tariff rates, higher prices

MINNEAPOLIS — From model trains to rockets, games, puzzles and toys, Hub Hobby in Richfield is filled with products shipped in from around the globe.

“If you walk about, you will see something for everybody; every age group, every discipline,” store manager John Ivey said. “I see parents use this as a reward for their kids. They actually say, ‘Okay, good grades this quarter, we’re going to Hub Hobby.’ Not necessarily to buy anything. You should see them bouncing off the walls when they’re coming in.”

Ivey said the hobby store works with hundreds of vendors and distributors, with many items imported from China, Japan and Taiwan. “We do have to work with that many because there’s such an eclectic inventory.”…
