In the aftermath of the distressing shooting at Church of the Annunciation on August 27, the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) has taken active steps to ensure the safety of students returning to school. Last week signaled not only the start of a new academic year but also the deployment of MPD’s Community Safety Officers (CSOs) across the city’s educational institutions. Partnering with local and state law enforcement agencies, MPD has significantly increased patrols near schools and places of worship throughout Minneapolis.
The department’s latest initiative saw CSOs accompanying sworn MPD officers as they visited over 135 public and private schools in the area, a measure meant to reinforce security and community trust. In addition to their presence, these officers-in-training engaged in supporting community healing efforts, particularly necessary given the recent traumatic event. As noted on the official Minneapolis Police Department Facebook page, “We are grateful to our officers-in-training and partners for keeping our city safe and supporting healing in our community.”
