Shooter opens fire in St. Paul as deputies investigate stolen vehicle

A shooting in St. Paul on Friday left one man critically injured and created a “life-and-death situation” for deputies who were making an arrest nearby when the shooter opened fire, according to authorities.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened around 8:20 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment building on the 1600 block of Maryland Ave. E., in the city’s Greater East Side neighborhood.

“A stolen car investigation turned into a life-and-death situation for deputies,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook, stating deputies had boxed in a stolen vehicle and were arresting the uncooperative driver when “someone started shooting from across the parking lot.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, at least one bullet ricocheted off a squad car as the shooter fired from only about 30 yards away…
