Minnesota Zoo Confirms Sad, Life-Ending News For ‘Brave’ Lion

You never want to see a suffering animal, and some Minnesota visitors were concerned about their favorite lion, named Mumford, at a local zoo.

Officials with the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota, recently shared a truthful and heartbreaking message about Mumford’s current condition. He’s sick, but remains strong.

In an emotional Facebook post from the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, staff have confirmed that their “beloved” Mumford has been diagnosed with an “untreatable tumor within his nasal sinuses.” This explains the recent nosebleeds zoo-goers have noticed.

Staff are making sure that Mumford is comfortable and receiving the best care possible. Veterinarians are doing their best to keep this “magnificent lion” in the best spirits.

While the condition is serious, there’s no clear timeline and he’s still having good days and spending time with Maji. After thoughtful discussions with our veterinary team and consulting specialists, we’ve made the compassionate decision to focus on his comfort and quality of life rather than treatments that could cause more harm than good. Mumford is now receiving hospice care. His dedicated keepers are monitoring him closely each day, making sure he’s comfortable and still enjoying his days alongside Maji. He continues to spend time in his habitat, doing many of his favorite “Mumford things,” and his wellbeing remains our highest priority.
