Afton man charged after St. Thomas lockdown

ST PAUL, Minn. — A 46-year-old Afton man is accused of making violent threats toward a University of St. Thomas employee, prompting school officials to issue a lockdown at its St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses.

Ryan Schacht was charged in Ramsey County after prosecutors said he violated a harassment restraining order by threatening an employee whom he blamed for his failed business. According to the criminal complaint, Schacht, who was a former student at the university, went to the Archdiocese of St. Paul demanding to speak to supervisors and other people who weren’t in the building. Schacht also threatened to harm himself if he wasn’t let in.

Prosecutors say he then called the university and reported that he had a gun on university property, claiming he was going to the university president’s office. Court documents say he threatened to harm himself again, and later told a university dispatcher he was going to “kill someone” if he couldn’t speak to a specific university employee, who claims to have never met Schacht…
