The South Metro Fire Department, which serves South St. Paul and West St. Paul, has appointed Mike Nelson as its new fire chief. Nelson will officially start on May 30, 2026, following the retirement of Chief Mark Juelfs, who will step down at the end of May. Nelson previously worked for South Metro before serving as chief in Shakopee and recently returned to the department. The department was formed in 2008 through the merger of the South St. Paul and West St. Paul fire departments.
