Flood-prone homes rising to new heights in Tampa Bay, thanks to new technology

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — This sight is wild — an entire home, separated from its foundation, inching upward slowly. The hydraulic lifts move it up about two inches over the course of an hour. The walls are still there. The windows are still there. The roof is still there. But underneath the home, where the foundation used to meet the ground, there is now open space, steel, wood cribbing, jacks, beams and workers moving carefully beneath the structure.

It is a strange sight, but one that may become more common in flood-prone coastal communities across Tampa Bay.
