Wimauma student nearly bites tongue in half after staff member puts him in ‘chokehold’: document

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Wimauma Youth Academy staff member was arrested Wednesday after allegedly abusing a student, according to the State Attorney’s Office of the 13th Judicial Circuit.

A pretrial detention motion described the incident on Jan. 17, saying that at about 5:14 p.m., the victim was walking from a classroom to the school’s cafeteria.

Officials said the student stopped at another classroom on the way to give another student their headphones back.

“As the victim was leaving that classroom, the defendant [Brandon Tyrone Henry] came up behind him and put him in a rear chokehold (right arm around the victim’s neck.)” the document stated. “The defendant held the victim in this position for approximately ten seconds, rendering the victim unconscious.”

The teen then fell and bit his tongue “almost in half” as well as getting cuts on his left eye, cheek, and mouth, the State Attorney’s Office said.

According to the motion, the incident was caught on video.
