TAMPA (WFLA) — Two men were killed after a small plane crashed into the Florida Everglades, according to NBC affiliate WTVJ .
WTVJ said the incident happened off Interstate 75 near mile marker 28.
Aerial footage of the scene shows the apparent wreckage of a Cessna plane with fire rescue crews responding by airboat.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue told WTVJ that two people were killed in the crash.
BSO Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane told WTVJ it is believed the plane left the North Perry Airport around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday before going off the radar around 6:45 p.m.
Kane said BSO received the call about the aircraft around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“They were beyond help at this point in time,” Kane said. “If the aircraft went down as it apparently did at 6:45, you’re talking, you know, 16 hours, 18 hours of those two parties being out there in the Everglades.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told WTVJ the wreckage was discovered around 10:50 a.m. and the number of passengers on the aircraft is unknown.
