CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — Clearwater leaders want to make sure residents and visitors are getting weather warnings loud and clear with a $1.3 million emergency alert system.
The alert system will allow the city to send immediate notifications via sirens.
“It’s about getting the message out and making sure they are aware of the conditions that are coming and are present,” said Derek Smith, with Clearwater Emergency Management.
Twenty-five sirens with lightning-detection capabilities are being installed across Clearwater to alert people of dangerous situations.
“If it saves more people, it’s always a good thing,” said Eddie Ryan, a Pinellas County resident.
Clearwater officials say the alert system will allow for notifications via phone to reach those who aren’t outdoors.
Smith told 8 On Your Side the system should go active in March.
