TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The NAACP Hillsborough County Chapter is challenging Tampa City Council over a promise it made during the national Black Lives Matter protests.
The council said it would create a commission to solve various problems like housing and unemployment, but three years later, that commission still doesn’t exist.
“The City of Tampa needs to be proactive instead of reactive,” said Yvette Lewis, president of NAACP Hillsborough County Chapter.
The commission would address various issues, including reforms to policing that would reduce racial disparities, policies that eliminate the disproportionate mass incarceration of people of color, protect the right to vote from discrimination based on race, and implement policies and programs to educate Tampa residents about the injustice of slavery and racial discrimination.
The NAACP is still waiting for city council to take action.
However, part of the problem is that the man who was leading the charge is no longer on the council.
