‘Deplorable conditions’: Manatee Animal Welfare recovers 69 rabbits from Bradenton hoarder

Manatee County Animal Welfare rescued 69 rabbits and recovered 32 dead rabbits from a hoarding home in Bradenton.

Manatee County Animal Welfare was called to a home in “deplorable conditions” at 1518 15 St. W. in Bradenton after receiving a hoarding complaint. The animals were taken to the Bishop Animal Shelter in Bradenton for evaluation and veterinary care.

“Hoarding is very difficult, because people usually are well intended, and unfortunately, they get overwhelmed and it gets out of control,” said Sarah Brown, deputy director for community and veteran services.

A caretaker was present at the home but told responders that they were overwhelmed by the current conditions. They told investigators that the rabbits were just their pets, and they weren’t planning on selling them.

MCAW is applying to have permanent custody of the animals from the current owner so that the rabbits can be fostered and eventually adopted.
