TAMPA (WFLA) — A bill making its way through the Florida Legislature aims to name a road in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties in honor of a slain U.S. Navy sailor .
House Bill 841, introduced by Rep. Michele Rayner, D-St. Petersburg, would designate the road across the Gandy Bridge to the “Airman Mohammed ‘Mo’ Sameh Haitham Memorial Way.”
The Florida Department of Transportation said the bridge would remain the Gandy Bridge, and the honorary name would only designate the road that travels across the bridge.
Haitham, Ensign Joshua Watson, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Cameron Walters were killed during a terror attack at a training facility at NAS Pensacola in 2019 .
On Dec. 6, 2019, a Saudi Arabian military student who accused the U.S. of being anti-Muslim and criticised the nation’s support of Israel opened fire at the facility. Along with the three airmen killed, eight others were injured and the gunman was killed by responding law enforcement officers.
