Rooted in Progress: Omega Psi Phi fundraises in Tampa Bay while celebrating its history

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — We are not Los Angeles, and this is certainly not Laker town, but the Tampa Bay area is about to be invaded by the purple and gold this weekend.

In this episode of Rooted In Progress , we are talking all about the Omega Psi Phi takeover. The Greek organization is hosting its international conclave in the city this weekend.

Before the events officially get underway, our Deanne King sits down with the organization Visit Tampa Bay. President and CEO Santiago Corrada tells us this gathering has a huge impact on the city’s economy.

Just last year, almost 50 million dollars were raised when the Kappa Psi Phi fraternity and Delta Sigma Theta were here. The numbers are astounding, especially because the Tampa Bay area is not home to any Historical Black College or University.

Brother Dennis Davis has been a member of the Omega Psi Phi Tampa chapter for decades. He shares the events taking place, the history behind the organization and why Tampa was selected as the host location.
