Lightning Reportedly Reach Agreement With Jake Guentzel

Victor Hedman speaks with media following 7-0 shutout win against the Flyers (0:49)

Earlier today, the Lightning took a gamble and acquired Jake Guentzel’s signing rights from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round pick. It appears that it is a decision that will pay off.

According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Jake Guentzel have agreed to terms on a contract. However, Seravalli also noted that the details of the agreement may not be revealed until tomorrow (July 1) because the club “has other moving parts.”

After trading Mikhail Sergachev and Tanner Jeannot on Saturday, the Lightning freed up the cap space to make a Guentzel signing possible. Now, it appears that they are, in fact, going to successfully sign their top target.

With Guentzel expected to be signed, he will provide the Lightning’s top six with a significant boost. The 29-year-old is coming off another excellent season, recording 30 goals and 77 points in 67 games split between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hurricanes.
