Multi-Agency Operation In Florida Targets Street Racing With 32 Arrested, 457 Traffic Stops

TAMPA, Fla. – A united effort by several law enforcement agencies in Florida cracked down on dangerous driving and street racing on major bridges in the Tampa Bay area. This initiative, called ‘Operation Keep Our Streets,’ aimed to improve safety for the community.

The operation coincided with the launch of Senate Bill 1764, which strengthens penalties for street racing and protects emergency vehicles responding to such events.

The focus of ‘Operation Keep Our Streets’ was on the Gandy Bridge and Courtney Campbell Causeway, notorious for past incidents of high-speed racing (over 100 mph).

Construction on the Howard Frankland Bridge, another trouble spot, prevented its inclusion. However, a recent rollover crash there due to reckless driving underscores the importance of continued enforcement.

“FHP is committed to ensuring Florida roadways are safe for everyone to travel,” said FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner. “This operation and its success reflect our commitment and provide ample warning to those who jeopardize public safety; FHP aggressively enforces traffic and criminal laws to protect our citizens and visitors.”
