Bucs vs. Commanders: ‘I’m Not The Savior!’ Smart Take From Jayden

AUG 31 THE SAVIOR Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is already proving he knows how to handle himself in off-field pressure spots.

A key example? Daniels was recently asked about the growing expectations around this season … much of it based on the optimism that he, as the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, is bringing.

“Just going through it,” said Daniels. “Just going out there and being myself, knowing who God made me. Stay grounded; don’t get too high, don’t get too low. … At the end of the day, it takes a team to help people out.

“I can’t go out there and think I am the savior.”

It’s a smart take. He’s lowering the bar of early expectations, maybe. But more than that, in a football sense, he’s reminding himself to not try to beat the Bucs in Week 1 (and beyond) all by himself. Because that won’t work.

AUG 30 UNIQUE? Commanders assistant general manager Lance Newmark is touting Jayden Daniels and the situation in Washington – which opens the season against the Bucs – as “unique.”
