Tampa Electric defends plan to charge residents millions more so big companies save

A week of Tallahassee hearings over Tampa Electric’s request to raise rates concluded Friday after testimony revealed how the hikes would increase customers’ bills. The hearings, held by utility regulators called the Public Service Commission, featured extensive questioning of Tampa Electric executives by lawyers fighting the $445 million proposed increases, which would go into effect over the next three years. Because the commission limited the hearings to one week – over the objections of the Office of Public Counsel, which represents customers – the days were long and grueling, with up to 13 hours of highly technical question-and-answer.
