No more sandbags available at this Pinellas County sandbag site

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Many people in Pinellas County went to the Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste facility in St. Petersburg Tuesday morning to prepare for a potential hurricane.

The site on 109th Avenue N. was out of sandbags. The county’s website said they were available year-round here.

Sandbag sites open across Tampa Bay ahead of potential storm

“I came here yesterday to get sandbags. It was about 1 or 1:30 and there were about four sandbags left and they were broken and filled with ants,” said Pinellas County resident Dee Cortez.

Another person on site said there were still no sandbags at 4 p.m. Monday either.

8 On Your Side did some digging and discovered the prefilled sandbags won’t be available again until after the storm. That’s what county officials on site told us as a “no prefilled bags available” sign went up at about 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The County said this site stops offering sandbags when a big storm could be coming and opens separate ones where more people can fit.
