School rezoning a possibility for some in Pinellas County

LARGO, Fla. (WFLA) — It’s been 14 years since the Pinellas County School Board has looked into redrawing school district boundary lines.

However, that might change due to a new affordable apartment complex in the works.

Southern Oak and Fuguitt Elementary Schools are at the center of the possible decision because the housing may bring their enrollment levels beyond capacity causing a ripple effect.

The district uses a grid system to determine boundary lines. The new proposed plan could pull students into Fuguitt Elementary from Southern Oak Elementary, if it is approved.

Not only will rezoning help allocate the growing population to better fit the residential boom, but it will address transportation efficiency and better opportunities across the district for students.

The school board will meet two more times to discuss the possible changes, with its first reading on Nov. 12 and then again in January 2025.
