Some Floridians Are Walking Away From Their Damaged Homes And Selling For A Loss: “I’ve Had Enough”

Floridians know that there are some years when June 1 to November 30th has some level of unpredictability due to the weather. In 2024, Florida was hit hard by a series of storms, leaving some Floridians with damage that is not fully covered by insurance (when the homeowners have it.) As a result, some Floridians are saying they’re willing to walk away from their damaged homes.

Ready To Be Done In St. Petersburg: Ali Linville, who lives in St. Petersburg’s Shore Acres, lives in a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom home. The home is down to the studs due to damage from weathering three different bouts of damage. She told ABC Action News that she is now willing to walk away despite the fact that her home is for sale for $150,000 less than the purchase price. She explained:

“I just want to leave. I mean, once you’ve had it done three times, it’s like, OK, I’ve had enough.”

Another Shores Acres resident, Chris Beardslee, is also selling – after he rebuilds. He explained to Fox 13:

“Is this worth going through again? How am I going to feel next year, let alone two weeks later like this one was? It’s more important for peace of mind for the future to move along and sell the house for what we can get for it.”
