The Tampa Bay area boasts incredible fishing opportunities for both residents and visitors, and it is a significant part of our local economy, bringing in millions of dollars every year. Nearly all anglers and fishers have a deep appreciation for Florida’s diverse wildlife and are knowledgeable, but our thriving tourism industry brings people of all backgrounds to our waters looking to try their hand at fishing as well. As with all human actions, there are unintended consequences for our wild neighbors. At the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, the number one cause of injury seen in our avian patients is due to fishing tackle, accounting for 40% of our caseload on average every year.
