Substitute teacher charged with battery after altercation with student

TAMPA, Florida — A substitute teacher at Webb Middle School has been arrested following an altercation with a student, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on March 25, 2025, when 26-year-old Benjamin Barnes, of Tampa, Florida, engaged in a verbal altercation with a 14-year-old male student.During the confrontation, Barnes allegedly used racially charged language, attempted to instigate a fight, and forcibly took the student’s cell phone. The student subsequently fled the classroom and reported the incident to a school resource deputy.
