St. Pete-born ‘no wake law’ goes into effect statewide

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florida’s new “no wake law” for vehicles driving too fast on flooded streets went into effect on July 1, and the St. Petersburg Police Department has issued an enforcement memo to officers.

“This is a public service campaign to be able to get people to do the right thing,” said Assistant Police Chief Mike Kovascev. “Citations are secondary, but they will come if people don’t do the right thing.”

The law makes it illegal to drive a vehicle at a speed which creates an excessive wake on a flooded street. An SPPD memo states an officer should consider the condition of the roadway, any warning signs present, the speed limit, the speed of the vehicle and the impact of the wake on nearby property, including residences…
