A dog in St. Petersburg was fatally injured in what police are describing as a tragic accident involving fireworks. The incident took place yesterday night, around 7:45 p.m., on 8th Avenue South near 38th Street South. According to St. Pete police, as reported by WFLA, individuals were setting off fireworks and throwing them into an alley when a loose dog chased and bit into one of the lit fireworks. The explosive subsequently detonated in the dog’s mouth, leading to fatal injuries.
Despite the horrific outcome, law enforcement officials have decided to not press charges. They consider the incident to be an accident, a stance that is mirrored in statements reported by both WTSP and FOX 13. Witnesses told police that the dog was attracted by the fireworks activity and that its action of picking up one of the explosive devices led directly to the tragic event.
