St. Pete man accused of driving over 100 mph with arms out like ‘Jack on the Titanic’

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (WFLA) — A St. Petersburg man was charged over the weekend after apparently trying to recreate a scene from Titanic while going 50 mph over the speed limit.

Florida’s new “Super Speeder Law,” which went into effect on July 1, came with a law enforcement crackdown on excessive speeding.

Damon Henkins, 34, became all too familiar with this increased enforcement on Sunday morning while traveling on U.S. Highway 19.

An affidavit from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said Henkins was seen going 105 mph in a 55 mph zone. Unlucky for him, the very two things that now qualify someone as a “super speeder” are going 50 over the posted limit, or going over 100 mph.

But the breakneck speeds weren’t enough to reach the “I’m flying” moment in Titanic. So Henkins was also holding his arms outstretched like “Jack on the Titanic,” the affidavit said…
