Green, a Hillsborough County, Fl. mother of two, was cited for brown grass, a dented garage door, mildew-covered mailbox and parking a cargo van in her driveway—issues she says stemmed from drought restrictions and a shaded lawn.

The HOA filed a lawsuit when Green missed mediation. Representing herself in court, she submitted a handwritten defense that was dismissed. A judge then ordered her to fix the violations within 30 days or face jail time…
