Hillsborough County Proclaims August as Black Business Month, Celebrating Local Black Entrepreneurs’ Impact

In a recent county commissioners meeting, Hillsborough County took a significant step to formally recognize the contributions of Black entrepreneurs by declaring August as Black Business Month. This designation arrives as a salute to the substantial impact of Black-owned businesses within the U.S. overall, as well as specifically within the State of Florida and Hillsborough County. Integrated in myriad sectors, from health care to IT, these enterprises make up a vibrant part of the economic landscape.

The proclamation was accepted by LaKendria Robinson, president of the Orenda Collective, who underscored the importance of such acknowledgment. According to a Hillsborough County news release, Robinson expressed her gratitude towards the Board and emphasized that Black Business Month is a moment “to recognize the value of Black entrepreneurs as innovators, job creators, and economic drivers.” This initiative seeks to visibly support and celebrate the over 10% of U.S. businesses that are Black-owned and which provide a significant number of services, goods, and employment opportunities to Americans.

Statistics highlight the importance of these businesses, with Black-owned companies representing about 30% of all minority-owned businesses in the United States.
