In a recent incident that took place on the evening of August 6, a routine traffic stop escalated into a significant narcotics seizure. Deputies pulled a vehicle over for minor infractions including a broken tag light and illegal window tint near North Nebraska Avenue and Skipper Road in an attempt to enforce traffic laws, what followed was an unexpected discovery as a passenger made a hasty exit and disposed of a suspicious package behind the car, according to a post by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
The passenger, identified as 45-year-old Antwan Wesley, exited the vehicle at an apartment complex on Skipper Road and was witnessed throwing a plastic package while resisting officers’ commands to desist, the said package along with another found nearby contained two bricks of cocaine that together weighed in at about 2.9 pounds or 1321.9 grams. Wesley, who has a criminal history encompassing over 75 charges and has been convicted 15 times, now faces several felony charges including trafficking in cocaine and resisting an officer with violence, among others.
Sheriff Chad Chronister was quoted in HCSO’s social media post stating, “This arrest is a perfect example of how proactive policing stops drugs from reaching our neighborhoods.” Chronister heralded the efforts of the deputies as a key measure in keeping the community safe and tackling the problems posed by repeat offenders.
