St. Pete woman charged after dog picks up lit firework, dies

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A St. Petersburg woman was arrested Wednesday, over a month after her dog picked up a lit firework and died after it exploded.

An arrest report from the St. Petersburg Police Department said Yasha Davis, 37, knew the dog was loose in the yard and told others, including officers, that it would chase after the fireworks, “but made no attempt to secure the animal.”

Police said the 5-year-old pitbull “caught a firework in it’s mouth and died a cruel death by explosive.”

Davis was the subject of “numerous investigations by animal control.” Police said the most recent investigation began in September 2024 and resulted in 11 civil citations against Davis, “primarily concerning the dogs in her care running at large due to the yard where the dogs are kept being totally unsecure,” the arrest report said…
