We Run These Streets: A community 5K in South St. Pete

On Friday, October 4, the We Run These Streets 5K will bring together neighbors, families, and friends to celebrate 10 years of impact by the Foundation for a Healthy St. Pete. The event is a first-of-its-kind celebration for South St. Pete, designed for all ages and abilities.

Runs like this are often concentrated in predominantly white areas and come with steep registration fees, making them inaccessible to many communities. We Run These Streets is intentionally breaking that mold by ensuring cost is not a barrier. The Foundation is offering discount codes for anyone who needs them, underscoring its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Your race, your pace at We Run These Streets

The 5K welcomes everyone, regardless of pace or experience. Participants can sprint for a personal record, walk with kids, push a stroller, or cheer from the sidelines. The route begins at the Foundation’s offices, winds along the Skyway/Clam Bayou Trail through the mangroves, loops near the Childs Park Recreation Center, and returns to the starting point.

The importance of this first-ever community run

The Foundation recognizes that health is shaped by more than genetics. Education, job opportunities, access to healthcare, and strong neighborhood ties also play a significant role. We Run These Streets is a chance to strengthen those ties while celebrating the neighborhoods that make up South St. Pete.

Joshua Bean, the Foundation’s impact manager, finds this especially important. A leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion, Bean brings more than 10 years of racial equity work to the table. For him and the Foundation, bringing a community race to South St. Pete is a way to create meaningful change through gatherings that may look ordinary on the surface but carry the weight of opportunities many have gone without.

How St. Pete locals can get involved

  • Register to walk or run: First-timers and seasoned athletes alike are welcome.
  • Cheer people on: Support family, friends, and neighbors from the sidelines.
  • Volunteer: Help with water stations, route directions, and race logistics.
  • Spread the word: Share the event and invite your networks to participate.

In the weeks leading up to the race, the Foundation is also supporting the new South St. Pete Run Club, which meets on Mondays and welcomes people of every fitness level. The group provides a supportive environment to get moving while fostering friendships. Follow @southstpeterunclub for details.
