Hillsborough County Grants $13 Million to Tampa for Major Intersection Safety Upgrades

In a move that addresses longstanding traffic safety concerns within Tampa’s city limits, Hillsborough County is putting some serious coin towards upgrading more than a dozen problematic intersections. The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recently approved a transfer of $13 million to the City of Tampa earmarked specifically for a slew of design and construction improvements aimed at enhancing safety for both drivers and pedestrians, reports Hillsborough County’s official government newsroom.

These funds, dedicated to intersection enhancement projects, involve County-managed roads that fall within the Tampa boundary. “The projects range from redesigning intersections to signal improvement projects,” according to Hillsborough County’s announcement, and of these, three key intersections are set for comprehensive design and construction aimed at boosting their safety record. The remaining 10 are slated for significant upgrades including modernized poles and improvements, ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The targeted intersections for comprehensive safety enhancements include Columbus Drive at Rome Avenue, Bayshore Boulevard at Swann Avenue, and Bayshore Boulevard at Euclid Avenue. These locations have been marked for a full design and construction overhaul. As for the other intersections due for an upgrade, they span a diverse set of locations such as Manhattan Avenue at Bay to Bay Boulevard, Howard Avenue at Cypress Street, and further locations covering Armenia Avenue, Henderson Boulevard, amongst others dotting the city’s map…
