Pair of suspected thieves team up to skip-scan $80 in merchandise at Walmart

A pair of women from St. Petersburg were arrested for theft after allegedly teaming up to skip-scan items at Walmart.

A deputy responded to Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27, Clermont, regarding shoplifting in progress around 5 p.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Of the three women detained, two were identified as 19-year-old Mena Kim Williams and 20-year-old Tor’nai Diane Mitchell.

A loss prevention associate advised that he saw the pair switching price tags on merchandise and covering unscanned items with scanned items in their cart. They then passed all points of sale with the merchandise worth $80.94. They were ultimately stopped and escorted to the loss prevention office to wait for law enforcement, the report said.

Security camera footage showed Williams holding a t-shirt under her left armpit which was covered by a blanket. At the same time, Mitchell grabbed items from the grocery cart and hovered them above the scanner. The barcodes were flipped around so they would not scan, and she put them in a plastic bag as if paid for. With that, Williams put the shirt inside the grocery cart as Mitchell put paid items over top of it, the report said…
