Greystar reaches federal settlement over rent-setting algorithms

TAMPA, Fla. — The nation’s largest landlord, Greystar, which operates apartment complexes in Tampa and Orlando, has agreed to a federal settlement over its use of algorithmic rent pricing.

The U.S. Department of Justice says Greystar participated in an anti-competitive scheme that drove up rent costs by sharing sensitive pricing data and relying on RealPage software to set rents.

“What this RealPage software allowed them to do, the lawsuit alleges, is collaborate with everyone else to keep the rents artificially high,” said attorney James Shaw…
