Gulfport police arrest man after deadly hit-and-run

Gulfport, Fla. A man has been arrested following a hit-and-run crash on Friday night near Tangerine Ave. and 49th St. S, according to the Gulfport police.

Investigators say 22-year-old Xavier Rigby was heading south on 49th St. in a 2021 Nissan Altima at a high rate of speed when the victim was struck.

38-year-old Kjersten Strang was riding her E-bike in the curb lane south on 49th St. when the collision happened around 10 p.m. She died from her injuries at the scene.

After the crash that caused her to land on the windshield of his car, Rigby continued driving for about eight blocks before she was dislodged from the vehicle.

Charges

  • Leaving the scene of a crash involving death
  • Vehicular homicide leaving the scene
  • DUI manslaughter

Rigby was taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

The crash forced officers to reroute traffic for a few hours Saturday evening as they investigated.
