Landspout spotted over Pinellas County landfill

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A landspout was spotted in Pinellas County on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency officials received reports of a possible tornado over the county landfill at around 12:36 p.m.

A storm report from the National Weather Service confirmed the funnel cloud was a landspout, based on photos provided by emergency officials and members of the media.

The NWS defines a landspout as “a tornado that does not arise from organized storm-scale rotation and therefore is not associated with a wall cloud (visually) or a mesocyclone (on radar).” They are considered the land-based equivalents of waterspouts…
