Clearwater, FL – Authorities in Pinellas County are alerting the public to a growing phone scam involving individuals impersonating a sheriff’s deputy named “Captain Stang” and pressuring residents about alleged legal issues.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office posted the warning Sunday, stating that scammers have been calling or texting local residents about supposed “legal matters” and leaving callback numbers that are not affiliated with law enforcement.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the fraudulent calls often include requests for immediate payment, typically through gift cards or cryptocurrency, and aggressive pressure to return the call.
