Community Farm chickens euthanized due to viral disease

The recent student-made chicken coop at the Eckerd Community Farm lies dormant after the death of two chickens in June. The rest of the flock was later euthanized in August due to the high concern of them contracting the disease too.

“For the first week, all the farm workers were really upset and couldn’t stop talking about it,” EC Community Farm manager Maggie Jensen ’11 said.

In March, 10 chickens were introduced and brought into the coop collaboratively made by the EC Makerspace and Jensen. Over the summer she, as well as some animal studies interns, discovered the mysterious death of one of the chickens…
