New parking rules targeting ‘land pirates’ seek to ban ‘van life’ from beach town as campers plead ‘we are your peers’

A CITY in a major American state once known as a haven for all things weird is now seeking to ban those living the van life from local parking lots.

Although a stay of execution has been ordered, some of the so-called land pirates have accepted that something will change sooner or later.

Residents of a city in Florida’s Tampa Bay area are at war over the legality of van lifers taking up spots in the parking lot of a derelict beach by day and on roads adorned with expensive waterfront property by night.

Once reputed as a haven for those with alternative lifestyles, gentrification spurred on in part by devastating hurricanes has led to different priorities from locals in Gulfport’s next chapter…
