Former St. Pete mayor David Fischer dies at 92: ‘Forever a staple in our city’s history’

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Former St. Petersburg Mayor David Fischer has died at the age of 92.

Fischer’s daughter, Susan Fischer McGarry, shared the news on social media Wednesday, writing that her “wonderful Dad passed away peacefully.” She added that her father was a “civic leader who will be greatly missed.”

Fischer served as mayor from 1991 to 2001. It was a period of revitalization for St. Pete, with Fischer placing an emphasis on downtown redevelopment and cultural investment, according to the St. Petersburg Museum of History.

He planted over 10,000 trees in the city and worked to renew neglected neighborhoods, often seeking to make urban life more inclusive, according to the museum. Fischer was also in charge during the inaugural season of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, now the Tampa Bay Rays.
