St. Pete to unveil the big 15,000-tile Sunshine City Mosaic at Sunset Park

The City of St. Petersburg will officially unveil The Sunshine City Mosaic with a community celebration at Sunset Park (Park St. and Central Ave.) on Wednesday, October 29, beginning at 5 p.m. Spanning roughly 175 feet and covering 700 square feet, the mosaic features more than 15,000 tiles arranged into nine detailed scenes celebrating Florida’s diverse wildlife.

Mayor Kenneth T. Welch described the project as a meaningful reflection of St. Pete’s creative identity. “As a City of the Arts, it’s critical to have public art represented in all pockets of St. Petersburg,” said Welch. “The Sunshine City Mosaic is not just a public art installation; it’s a celebration of our community’s spirit and natural beauty. It’s exciting to see such an ambitious project come to life, connecting our artistic culture with the stunning landscapes of our parks on the west side. This mosaic reflects St. Petersburg’s commitment to creativity and unity.”

The family-friendly celebration will include mosaic-themed arts and crafts, lawn games, and complimentary food and refreshments while supplies last. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs or picnic blankets to enjoy the evening comfortably. In addition to Mayor Welch, Council Chair Copley Gerdes and Celeste Davis, the City’s Director of Arts, Culture, and Tourism, the event will feature remarks from the artists behind the installation: Laura Spencer, Alex Kaufman, and George Retkes.

Parking will be limited across the street from the park at the former Pasadena Card Club, located at 10 Park St. N. Visitors are encouraged to use legal street parking nearby or walk to the park if possible…
