Johns Pass businesses report fake $20 bills; deputies look for those responsible

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a string of reported counterfeit bills in Johns Pass.

“The currency pen didn’t work; normal cash management protocols didn’t work,” said Captain Dylan Hubbard, owner of Hubbard’s Marina. “Later on, once things slowed down and we had a little bit more time to pay attention, and it was pretty clear that we had some questionable money on our hands.”

He said he and his fellow business owners have security videos of two people visiting each of their shops and using fake $20 bills to pay for things or make change.

“These are businesses that are reeling from the hurricane last year, and they’re smaller operations with a lot of overhead and very minimal margins, so it definitely hurts,” Hubbard said…
