Families in Tampa Bay fear food insecurity as SNAP benefits remain at risk

TAMPA, Fla. — “I do have a daughter with four boys, and I’m worried about them being able to eat this coming month,” says Karen Strachen, one of thousands of families in the Tampa Bay area who rely on SNAP to put food on the table.

Across the country, one in eight Americans depends on SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The program provides vital support for families, seniors, and individuals struggling to afford groceries.

Amid the ongoing government shutdown, two federal judges in Rhode Island and Massachusetts have ordered the Trump administration to use contingency funds to keep SNAP running, at least temporarily. The rulings give the government until Monday to decide whether it will tap into those funds…
