ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — An 85-year-old St. Pete man who is accused of running over a pedestrian in a Publix parking lot last Friday admitted to police that he knew he ran “something” over, but still didn’t stop and drove home instead.

Just before 5 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Publix on 37th Avenue North, Darrell Briggs struck and ran over an elderly woman in the parking lot before fleeing the scene, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.
The woman, 91-year-old Mary Broughton, was taken to the hospital, where she died of her injuries.

Briggs was located and arrested at his apartment complex a few hours later, police said. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a felony.
