TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – State lawmakers may be on track to explore returning legislation known as the ‘Crown Act.’ It’s a bill looking to ban hair discrimination, hoping to protect students who wear their hair naturally in styles like locks, afros, and braids.
This has been State Representative Fentrice Driskell’s 5th year carrying the bill, and while it’s failed to make it across the finish line in the past, Driskell says this year feels different.
“I think what makes a difference this year is that by working with students in the area, I’ve now heard their stories. I’ve heard from young girls of how they were in elementary school, as young as second grade, and told you have to sit in the back of the classroom because your natural hair is too big and you’re blocking other students, making them feel like they did something wrong,” said Leader Driskell (D-Tampa)…
