PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scheme focused on parking meters and mobile parking areas that is aimed at identity theft.
Criminals across the county have placed fraudulent QR code stickers over existing ones, easily retrieving bank information in seconds.

“They’re gonna steal your bank account information. So if you’re using your debit cards, they’re going to get those numbers,” said Deputy Geoffrey Moore with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives inside the department’s Financial Crimes Division said that when using QR codes to park along beaches or streets, inspect the sign/meter prior to scanning to ensure no sticker has been placed.
