Column: A very magical birthday

I celebrated a birthday earlier this month. Thank you, thank you. I appreciate all your gifts and well-wishes. You are all too kind. Now this year was not a particularly significant birthday, though I guess at my age all birthdays are significant. Proof of this is my favorite card this year, pictured here. In reality, by about 9 or 10 in the evening I can hear my bed calling me.

For this year’s birthday, my wife purchased tickets for us to attend the Zubrick Magic Theater. Now before I go further, I should tell you this was an incredibly selfless thing to do because she doesn’t like magic. But she knows that I do. We went on a Saturday afternoon (remember me and the cows) and we both thought the show was incredible.

A few years ago, the Zubricks purchased what used to be a AAA office building on First Avenue North. They gutted it and turned it into their new home. What is so special about the theater is how small it is. All patrons sit extremely close to the stage, all the better to figure out how they do their magic (as if!). If you are sitting in the front row, you will likely be invited to participate. Especially if you are a kid…
