Tips for protecting your plants ahead of plunging temperatures

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With freeze warnings in effect across the area, plant experts say protecting your plants before temperatures drop is best.

Watering plants the day before a freeze and adding mulch can help insulate roots and trap heat in the soil. Plants that can be moved should be brought indoors or placed in warmer spots, like near the house or inside a garage.

“So there is more call to bring maybe something into your garage, or keep it close to the house where it’s a little warmer, or cover them with frost cloth,” said Anita Camacho, owner of Little Red Wagon Native Nursery.

For plants that must stay outside, experts recommend using breathable frost cloths, especially for non-native plants. These cloths can be purchased at any hardware store or online as well.
